Los hermanos Mario son dos plomeros, Mario y Luigi, que investigan las alcantarillas de New York, después de que criaturas extrañas hayan ido apareciendo por ahí. El objetivo del juego es derrotar a todos los enemigos en cada nivel. Los dos extremos de cada nivel tienen una característica mecánica que le permite al jugador salir por la izquierda y aparecer a la derecha, y viceversa. Cuantos más niveles cruce Mario, mayor será la dificultad, y aparecerán un número mayor de enemigos cada vez más fuertes y muchisimo más difíciles.

Al igual que muchos otros juegos arcade del momento, Mario Bros cuenta con un sistema de puntuación. Los puntos pueden ser obtenidos de varias maneras, ya sea por la recogida de monedas o derrotando enemigos. El jugador puede obtener puntos por derrotar a varios enemigos uno tras otro, y el jugador podrá participar en una ronda de bonos que da a él o ella una oportunidad para reunir más puntos. Dos años más tarde un videojuego basado en el mismo personaje:SUPER MARIO BROS, se convirtió en uno de los más vendidos de la historia.

The game

The Mario brothers are two plumbers, Mario and Luigi, who investigate the sewers of New York, after which strange creatures have been appearing there. The object is to defeat all the enemies on each level. The two ends of each level have a mechanical feature that allows the player to exit on the left and right appear and vice versa. The more levels crossing Mario, the greater the difficulty, and appear a greater number of enemies getting stronger and vastly more difficult.
Like many other arcade games of the moment, Mario Bros. has a scoring system. Points can be earned in several ways, either by collecting coins and defeating enemies.
